Copenhagen Games has announced the tournament structure for the 2012 event, which will feature a 20,000€ prize purse, running on April 4-8 in the Danish capital.
The organizers of the Danish event have rolled out the tournament structure for the event, which will be slightly different than last year.
Copenhagen Games was previously open to any team who signed up and paid the entry fee. This year teams must apply for an invitation. A total of 24 teams will be invited to what they call the "invitational tournament". An additional eight teams will qualify for this tournament, via a qualifier tournament played Thursday at the event.
The invitational tournament will therefore consist of 32 teams, split in eight groups of four teams. This group stage will be played in a best-of-three format where first and second placed teams will advance to the playoffs, while third and fourth ranked teams will drop to what they've labeled as the "losers tournament".
Sixteen teams will advance to the playoffs, being played in a double-elimination bracket, using a best-of-three format in the upper-bracket and a best-of-one format in the lower bracket.
Teams wanting to apply for an invite can do so by going to the Copenhagen Games support page, where they have to select "Apply for tournament invitation" in "Subject" field and furthermore add a description about the team and past results. The first invites will be handed out on March 4 and the last on March 11.
